For the past 15 years, Aaron Needle, a member of the Charles Webster Potter Place Clubhouse in Waltham, has been quietly redefining what it means to create art in the margins鈥攓uite literally. His body of work, which he calls 鈥淢arginal Existence,鈥 transforms the overlooked edges of composition into intricate, expressive landscapes of color, texture and design.

Aaron鈥檚 artistic journey began modestly with handmade greeting cards. What started as simple designs has evolved into highly detailed, large-scale compositions that reflect both patience and precision. Today, his work is immediately recognizable for its signature structure: a central image framed by meticulously hand-cut patterns layered over vibrant marble paper.

The process behind each piece is as fascinating as the final result. Aaron uses handmade marble paper sourced from a local workshop, folding it much like one would when creating a paper snowflake. With a chiseled-edge blade or an X-Acto knife, he cuts through as many as nine layers of paper at once, producing delicate, symmetrical designs. These intricate cutouts are then carefully layered over the marbled backgrounds, creating depth. It takes Aaron over 15 hours over the course of 3-4 days to cut out the intricate designs.

At the heart of each composition lies a 鈥渢rade card,鈥 which was a form of commercial advertising popular during the Victorian Era. Rather than overshadowing these vintage images, Aaron鈥檚 ornate borders are designed to enhance them. The result is a harmonious blend of old and new, where historical imagery is elevated through contemporary craftsmanship. As Aaron describes it, he is 鈥渃reating art from art.鈥

His approach is deeply rooted in the idea of composition. Aaron views his work much like a musician. It鈥檚 an arrangement of colors, shapes, and patterns that come together like notes in a musical score.

Aaron鈥檚 connection to art began early in life, thanks to his older sister Patty. She introduced him to museums at a young age, literally wheeling him through the galleries at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in a baby carriage. That early exposure sparked a lifelong appreciation for creativity, one that Aaron has cultivated largely on his own. Aside from having taken a few classes, he is entirely self-taught.

For the past decade, Aaron has also worked as a Gallery Attendant at the Rose Museum at Brandeis University. Immersed daily in an environment of artistic expression, he continues to learn and draw inspiration from the works around him. 鈥淚 love that I am around art all the time,鈥 he says. A sentiment that clearly resonates in his own creations.

鈥淲e love showcasing the talents of our C.W. Potter Place members,鈥 said Director Patricia Vella. 鈥淪o, when we found out what an incredible artist Aaron Needle is, we couldn鈥檛 wait to display his art in the clubhouse. His pieces truly are amazing.鈥

Aaron鈥檚 work has been featured in several local venues. In addition to the C.W. Potter Place Clubhouse, Aaron鈥檚 work has been displayed at the Waltham Public Library, the Belmont Media Center, and the Newton Free Library. He also sells his art at local craft shows.

Regina St. John, owner of Chena River Marblers and creator of the handmade marble paper Aaron uses, describes his work with admiration. 鈥淲e were awed by the originality of his meticulously cut paper compositions. The impact of seeing Aaron鈥檚 genius with color, patterns, and design firsthand leaves a viewer momentarily speechless. For a marbler, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing paper you鈥檝e created become an intricate part of a work of art.鈥

Despite the recognition he has received, Aaron remains focused on a simple mission, to share his passion for marble paper and inspire others to explore its potential. He says, 鈥淢y own mission is to promote the use of marble paper as a medium for creating art, and my hope is to inspire people to explore marble paper as an artistic medium just as I have done.鈥

In a world that often overlooks the margins, Aaron Needle has found a way to make them the main event, transforming edges into expressions, and paper into poetry.

On March 10th, Charles Webster Potter Place Clubhouse was thrilled to welcome State Representative Thomas Stanley for a special visit. The lawmaker, who lives in Waltham, enjoyed a tour of the facility, spent time meeting with staff and members, and even sat down to join everyone for lunch.

This visit was the result of a meaningful connection Potter Place Director Patricia Vella, Community Coordinator Menucha Krinky, and clubhouse members made during their February visit to Beacon Hill for an advocacy day aimed at sharing with legislators the story of what Potter Place means to its members and the wider community. They spoke about the invaluable support the clubhouse provides, and the positive impact it has on the lives of people living with mental health conditions. 欧美日b大片 thanks the Massachusetts Clubhouse Coalition for organizing this Advocacy Day and providing the opportunity to highlight the work of clubhouses across the state.

After the Advocacy Day meeting, Vella invited Rep. Stanley to visit and see the program firsthand; he graciously accepted the invitation. During his visit, Stanley showed great interest in the daily activities that take place at the clubhouse and took time to learn about how the program operates. He was impressed by the collaborative environment and the dedication of both staff and members. He also expressed how wonderful it was to see the strong support the Waltham community provides to the clubhouse and its members.

Rep. Stanley described Potter Place as a 鈥渨onderful place,鈥 and recognized the importance clubhouses play in supporting individuals and strengthening communities.

鈥淲e are grateful for Representative Stanley鈥檚 visit and his interest in the work being done at Potter Place Clubhouse. His support helps bring greater awareness to the importance of clubhouse programs and the positive impact they have on so many lives,鈥 Vella said.

The 鈥淣o Shave Campaign鈥 is a fundraising/charity initiative, authorized by Waltham Police Chief Kevin O’Connell, that lets officers relax normal grooming rules, such as clean-shaven faces, in order to raise awareness and money for a cause.

Chief O’Connell and members of the Waltham Police Department presented Patricia Vella, Director of Potter Place Clubhouse, along with several program members with a check for $5,400 from the proceeds of the fundraiser.

鈥淲e want to thank the Waltham Police Department for their generous donation鈥 said Patricia Vella. 鈥淭his donation was an amazing surprise and will make a huge impact on our Clubhouse community.鈥

The Many Ports of Call On Lynn Bishop鈥檚 Cruise /the-many-ports-of-call-on-lynn-bishops-cruise/ Wed, 18 Feb 2026 23:07:44 +0000 /?p=12391 The post The Many Ports of Call On Lynn Bishop鈥檚 Cruise appeared first on 欧美日b大片.

February 8, 2026

Lynn Bishop presents a pen. 鈥淚 bought this pen, and it means a lot to me. Hold it until tomorrow,鈥 she instructs. At a table in The Roasted Granola Cafe, she explains how to boost the self-worth of people with mental health conditions.

鈥淭hey would feel like they matter. They could look at the pen and think, 鈥楾hat鈥檚 important to her, and she thinks I鈥檓 going to come back tomorrow.鈥欌

These small acts of trust are impactful, she says.

鈥淲hen we treat them like people who have value, they act like people who have value,鈥 she said.

After 35 years of working at the Edinburg Center 鈥 a Bedford-based human services agency for adults and children with mental health conditions and developmental disabilities 鈥 Bishop, 62, retired as executive vice president. The Arlington resident鈥檚 tenure at the center was part of her lifelong love for advocacy.

鈥淢y mother says I was born a feminist,鈥 Bishop said.

As a child, her father鈥檚 work as a diplomat transported Bishop, her mother and two siblings to New Zealand, Lebanon and West Africa. Bishop said that her time spent abroad helped her to better empathize with the Edinburg Center鈥檚 immigrant staff, many of whom hailed from regions like Haiti and East Africa.

鈥淚 think staff found me to be unusual because I understood when they said that they lived in a village,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 knew they didn鈥檛 mean the village of Newton.鈥

After graduating from Vassar College in 1985 with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in psychology and spending a year in Belize with the Peace Corps, Bishop reunited with a college friend in Somerville. The friend 鈥 who taught two nonspeaking children on the autism spectrum at the Language and Cognitive Development Center in Jamaica Plain 鈥 struggled with retaining staff and encouraged Bishop to visit.

That visit sparked her interest in special education.

鈥淚 fell in love with both of them,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey were as different as night and day, but to me they were such big puzzles.鈥

Bishop remained at the school for three more years before working as a vocational developer at the League School for Autism in Newton. At a work training, she met Donna Mills, who was then associate director of the Edinburg Center. In 1991, Bishop joined the center as the qualified intellectual disability professional program director.

鈥淭here wasn鈥檛 [a patient] that I found too difficult or too challenging,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 got the reputation in the area as a person who would take the people that nobody else wanted.鈥

After a center employee made a racist comment to another staff member, Bishop cofounded the center鈥檚 Diversity Committee in 1999. The committee鈥檚 programming centered around cultural competency and current issues, such as same-sex marriage.

With many employees from countries that criminalize same-sex relations, Bishop, who now worked in management, felt confident that people would eventually overcome their prejudice.

鈥淎 lot of the staff came from countries where gay people were killed and we were telling them that they had to accept us to work at 欧美日b大片,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 used my position of privilege to say, 鈥楾hey鈥檒l get to know me and my wife, and maybe they鈥檒l change their minds,鈥 and they did.鈥

In the wake of George Floyd鈥檚 murder by a Minneapolis police officer in May 2020, Bishop organized virtual town halls so people at the center could process their feelings together.

Edinburg Center CEO Patti Maguire praised Bishop鈥檚 efforts.

鈥淭here was just so much pain in our community and Lynn created a place for people to bring that,鈥 she said.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Bishop also launched Meaningful Whole Life. The initiative allows the individuals to collaborate with staff 鈥 referred to as 鈥淐hampions鈥 鈥 to create individualized day programming that caters to the individuals鈥 passions. The program supports roughly 300 activities ranging from fishing to crochet. Bishop says the program is 鈥渙ne of [her] proudest achievements.鈥

鈥淲e basically said, 鈥榃e鈥檙e not sure that you鈥檒l be able to achieve your wishes, because some of us never do, but we can help you towards the path,鈥欌 she said.

Bishop taught the people she worked with how to write letters to their state representatives and produced short videos about individuals. She also co-created the center鈥檚 annual Legislative Breakfast to connect state lawmakers with the disability community. In 2023, she received the Ruth M. Batson Advocate of the Year Award for her dedication.

Bishop emphasized how individuals with developmental disabilities are infantilized or ignored in many scenarios, such as during interviews with media personnel and at doctor鈥檚 appointments. She said this treatment makes self-advocacy challenging.

鈥淧eople with developmental disabilities get treated like children,鈥 she said. 鈥淎wareness about people with autism is relatively recent, and I think people dismiss them and some people are scared.鈥

Bishop continued her activism outside of the center by working on political campaigns, including that of Arlington鈥檚 first openly gay selectperson, Dan Dunn, in 2009 and Gov. Maura Healey鈥檚 runs for attorney general and governor.

Outside of campaigning, Bishop maintains a close relationship with Healey and her sister, Tara. After being diagnosed with throat cancer in December 2024, Gov. Healey called to offer assistance.

After undergoing a laryngectomy, Bishop couldn鈥檛 speak for roughly a year before receiving a voice prosthesis device a couple weeks ago. She said losing her voice was an eye-opening experience.

鈥淚鈥檝e worked with people who couldn鈥檛 hear and who couldn鈥檛 speak because of developmental disabilities, but I never knew how discriminated against the voiceless were,鈥 she said.

Bishop鈥檚 cancer diagnosis prompted an early retirement from the Edinburg Center.

Kathleen Doherty, the former executive vice president of the Edinburg Center takes Bishop to her doctor鈥檚 appointments and eats lunch with her every week. She said Bishop is perpetually positive.

鈥淲hen I could be the black cloud of doom, she is that bright light.鈥

In retirement, Lynn enjoys painting and spending time with her four dogs, Ms. Rita Bean, Gus, Jazz and Domino. She also frequently visits the center.

Bishop calls her healing journey a boat cruise. During a dinner at Barcelona Wine Bar in Cambridge, she invited her loved ones to support her as members of 鈥淟ynn鈥檚 Village.鈥

鈥淚 was going to go on a cruise. If you were part of my cruise, you鈥檙e part of Lynn鈥檚 village,鈥 she said. 鈥淟ynn鈥檚 Village was a huge success. Probably this spring, the cruise is coming into harbor parking.鈥

February 3, 2026

欧美日b大片 in Bedford has opened a new on-site food pantry to support clients and staff in need due to food prices rising and food insecurity.

Established in 1977 and based in Bedford, 欧美日b大片 serves thousands of children and adults with mental health challenges, intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism, and brain disorders. It employs more than 200 staff members.

For many of 欧美日b大片鈥檚 clients with disabilities, transportation barriers make accessing off-site food pantries especially difficult. By offering a food pantry on-site, the center has removed an obstacle to food access while providing immediate support. Clients are also actively involved in helping to operate the pantry.

鈥淎s food insecurity continues to impact so many in our community, we felt it was critically important to help bridge that gap for both our clients and our staff by opening this food pantry,鈥 stated Patti Maguire, president and chief executive officer of 欧美日b大片. 鈥淔ood is a basic necessity, yet many of the people we serve are struggling to access it. We are incredibly grateful to our supporters and are once again asking our community to come together and help fill the gap. Every donation, no matter how big or small, makes a meaningful difference.鈥

Donations can be dropped off at 欧美日b大片鈥檚 front lobby at 205 Burlington Road, Bedford. Monetary donations may also be made directly through 欧美日b大片鈥檚 website. Donors are asked to designate that their contribution is for the food pantry.

The food pantry also welcomes contributions of nonperishable groceries and grocery store gift cards. All donations go directly to individuals and families served by 欧美日b大片.

Most-needed items include canned vegetables, beans, and soup; rice, pasta, and cereal; shelf-stable milk and baby formula; peanut butter and canned protein (e.g., tuna, salmon, chicken, beans, lentils); and cooking oil and spices.

Community members are encouraged to drop off donations or contribute grocery gift cards to support neighbors in need.

On November 20th, 欧美日b大片鈥檚 Charles Webster Potter Place Clubhouse in Waltham hosted a heartwarming Thanksgiving Harvest Lunch, bringing clubhouse members together to celebrate the season of gratitude. The event featured a classic Thanksgiving feast complete with turkey, stuffing, and all the traditional holiday favorites. To finish the meal on a sweet note, members enjoyed a delicious assortment of pies.

What made the event especially meaningful was the hands-on involvement of Potter Place members. They played an important role in the planning and preparation of the lunch, helping to cook and organize the day鈥檚 festivities. Much of the food was generously donated by local grocery stores and restaurants, reflecting the strong community support that surrounds Potter Place.

The dining tables were adorned with handmade centerpieces crafted by the members themselves.聽 These decorations featured hand-painted craft sticks, each one personalized with expressions of gratitude. The colorful display served as a beautiful reminder of the purpose of the gathering.

The Thanksgiving Harvest Lunch not only celebrated the holiday, but also offered members the chance to share time, connect with one another, and reflect on the positive aspects of their lives. The event embodied the spirit of togetherness that Potter Place fosters year-round.

With the arrival of fall, apple picking becomes a go-to activity for families and friends looking to enjoy the crisp air, colorful leaves, and simple pleasures of the season. But for individuals with disabilities, this quintessential New England experience is often out of reach because many farms simply aren鈥檛 accessible.

That鈥檚 why we were so excited to share this fun tradition with a group from our Meaningful Whole Life (MWL) program.

On October 15, 欧美日b大片 brought a group of individuals to Tougas Family Farm in Northborough for a day of apple picking and hayrides. For many, it was their first ever hayride and apple-picking adventure, and it couldn鈥檛 have been a more beautiful fall day. Smiles, laughter, and the scent of fresh apples filled the air as everyone enjoyed the orchard together.

鈥淭ougas Family Farm is the most ADA-accessible farm we鈥檝e ever seen,鈥 said Emily Rankin, a Meaningful Whole Life Champion. 鈥淭heir wheelchair-accessible hay wagon, complete with a lift, allows individuals with mobility challenges to enjoy a scenic ride through the orchards.鈥

This outing is part of Edinburg鈥檚 Meaningful Whole Life program, which creates opportunities for people to experience the fullness of life鈥攎oments that many take for granted, like spending an afternoon in the sunshine, picking apples, and riding on a hay wagon with friends.

At its heart, MWL is about inclusion, accessibility, and the simple joys that connect us all. And on that gorgeous fall day at Tougas Family Farm, everyone was reminded that those joys truly belong to everyone.
